Recent Findings That May Improve Your Health The Need For A Seniors' HealthResearch Institute Our nation must become proactive in developing more effective preventions and treatments for chronic diseases of our rapidly growing senior population. If we continue on the present path of waiting until a disease develops to intervene, thousands more will die of cancer, stroke and heart disease, arthritis will continue to cripple our elderly, and health care costs will increasingly devour the wealth of the nation.
The Mission The mission of this institute is to improve the health of mature adults through basic and clinical research designed to develop more effective approaches for prevention and treatment of chronic health problems of this population.
The institute will focus on research directed at: What Is The Solution? Answer: A nonprofit research institute devoted to the development of preventions and treatments for chronic health problems of mature adults. The Olympic Peninsula Seniors' Health Research Institute is being established in Sequim, Washington, to address this need. This non-profit research institute is the idea of Carl W. Jackson, Ph.D, a biomedical researcher and 28 year faculty member at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. In the past year, Dr. Jackson came to realize that a private research institute like was needed to develop preventions and treatments for chronic diseases of this nation's mature adult population.

Why Has Dr. Jackson Initiated This Project? He has made scientific observations that could have major impacts on hypertension and malnutrition due to impaired digestion in the elderly. Others have made recent observations that should be explored relevant to prevention of specific cancers, stroke and heart disease. All of these observations have the potential to make a major impact on the health of mature adults. Funding Private funding is most conducive to innovative research. The Olympic Peninsula Seniors' Health Research Institute will be a non-profit, privately-funded research institute devoted to truly innovative research. A national fundraising organization is the optimal long-term funding mechanism. Why Sequim? Four reasons. First, Sequim is a retirement community with a population of well-educated retirees who will be knowledgeable and interested in participating in research studies and will benefit from the research. Second, Sequim's location on the Olympic Peninsula provides access to fresh, high-quality seafood which will be a resource for studies on hypertension. Third, the Battelle Marine Biology Research Laboratory in Sequim will be a major research resource for the institute. Fourth, the Olympic Mountains and waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the pleasant climate of Sequim will be important attractions in recruitment of scientists for the institute.
